9th Annual Health Care and Medical Education conference

People to People (P2P), a non-profit organization for Ethiopian Health Care Professionals in the Diaspora, will be hosting its 9th annual Health Care and Medical Education conference on September 23rd 2017 at the Residence Inn, Pentagon City, just outside of Washington DC. This event comes on the heels of 8 consecutive successful conferences which gained wide attendance by high officials of the Ethiopian Ministries of Health and Education, US governmental and academic institutions, and health care professionals both in Ethiopia and the Diaspora. The central theme for this year will be “Cancer and Cancer Care”, a topic you will agree, is gaining increasing importance in Ethiopia and beyond.

P2P has been promoting the concept of triangular partnership since its inception in 2009. This model recognizes the pivotal role Diaspora Health Professionals can play in fostering partnerships between US and Ethiopian Institutions of Higher Learning. Many of the newly emerging medical schools participated in the two day workshop P2P conducted in collaboration with the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), University of Kentucky (UK) and Welkite University (WKU) in February 2016 which was held in Addis Ababa. The conference this September will provide further opportunity to network and meet Ethiopian and US Institutions of Higher Learning who share the same mission and vision.

The main theme this year will be the current status of cancer care in Ethiopia and will brainstorm on ways to support clinical care, education and research in this field. To this end, we have assembled an impressive roster of speakers with wide experience in academia and building and supporting fellowship programs in Hematology and Oncology. As important stake holders in education and clinical care, participation of institutions like yours is critical for the success of our joint effort.

We hereby cordially invite you to attend our conference and share your experiences, hopes and aspirations with our conference participants. We plan to form a task force to actively work in building and supporting a Hematology/Oncology fellowship in one of the medical schools as it aligns with the blue print of the ministries of health and education. We also plan to conduct a follow up workshop in Ethiopia where concrete proposals will be written with the participation of all stake holders.

We are hopeful that your schedule will allow you to participate in this important conference. Full conference schedule and list of speakers will follow soon. We also invite you to attend the continuing medical education (CME) forum jointly organized by P2P and the Ethio-American Doctors Group (EADG) on Friday, September 22nd, 2017. This CME activity will be held in the same venue and is accredited by the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development and participants are eligible for 7.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM.
